Popular F-150 Keeps Truckin' with Advances in Technology, Towing

The Ford F-150 has been America’s best-selling truck for 38 years, and the 2016 model aims to keep that title with a new SYNC 3 infotainment system, a special appearance package and Ford’s breakthrough towing technology.

Under the Hood

Drivers have their choice of four engine options in the 2016 F-150 to ensure they get the truck that best fits their needs. A 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 282 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque with a fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway in 2WD models. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 generates 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque while getting 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Drivers wanting more power can opt for the 5-liter V8 engine, which delivers 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque while getting 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. Finally, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine puts out 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque with a fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

Power is transferred to the wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission, with SelectShift on some models.

Comfort and Convenience

Ford engineers designed the all-new Pro Trailer Backup Assist system to make towing a vehicle easier than ever before. Using advanced camera technology to see where the trailer is and needs to be headed while reversing, drivers can back up instinctively by turning a knob left or right, and the truck automates its steering and speed to put the trailer exactly where the driver wants it.

Depending on the engine, the 2016 F-150 can tow up to 7,600 - 12,200 pounds.

The newest incarnation of Ford’s advanced SYNC system comes on the 2016 F-150. Voice commands, seamless smartphone integration and an intuitive layout ensure that drivers are able to conveniently use hands-free calling, voice to text, stream audio and get where they want to go without hassle using turn-by-turn navigation.

Four-wheel vented disc brakes are standard on all models, with antilock braking system ensuring maximum stopping power, even when the truck is towing.

AdvanceTrac electronic stability control helps keep the vehicle on the driver’s intended course, rearview cameras ensure maximum vision while reversing, and all five cab configurations earned the coveted five-star safety rating.

In the event of a collision, a suite of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, a safety-cage body construction and other safety features ensure maximum safety for all occupants.
